From the desk of the president
Brothers, Visitors, and Friends:
I am Brother Ethan Z. Tillman, Esq., the 4th Chapter President of the Sigma Chi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to lead this chapter of accomplished, dedicated men of Alpha, and I welcome you to our online home.
More than a century ago, seven college men at Cornell University believed that scholarship, character, and service could change both individuals and society. Our Jewel Founders built Alpha Phi Alpha on principles that still guide every chapter today: Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind. That vision was never meant to stay on one campus or in one generation. It was built to extend into every community where leadership and opportunity were needed, including ours.
Sigma Chi Lambda carries that vision forward here in Jersey City, New Jersey's second-largest and fastest-growing city, known to us as "Chilltown." Our chapter was chartered on October 24, 2020, at the height of the global pandemic, by nine brothers who saw the need for an organized Alpha presence in this city and built one from nothing.
Our chapter also carries a physical symbol of our roots here. A tree stands in Jersey City in honor of the late George Biddle Kelley, one of Alpha Phi Alpha's Seven Jewels. Kelley became a son of Jersey City by marriage to the late Harriet Gross, a Jersey City native and graduate of Dickinson High School. The couple married in 1934 and lived here before relocating to upstate New York. Long before Sigma Chi Lambda existed, Alpha had a place in this city. We're proud to carry that history forward.
Since our charter, Sigma Chi Lambda has kept a serious focus on community service, brotherhood, youth mentorship, and civic engagement, and that focus continues under this administration. Brotherhood here means more than shared membership. It means showing up for one another, holding each other to the standard Alpha demands, and turning that standard outward into the community we serve.
Whether you're a brother of Alpha visiting from another chapter, an organization looking to partner with us on community work, or a college graduate considering membership, you are welcome here. Explore the site, learn our history, and reach out. We're on the move, and we'd like you to be part of it.
